Sustainability in the Bell Foundry Berger

Electric power

An electric induction furnace was installed in 1992 to melt the bronze. The oil smelting furnace from earlier times is maintained and maintained only for emergencies. In order to further optimize energy consumption, the bronze required for casting is precisely calculated before each melting. All melts are performed in sequence so that the residual heat from the previous cast can be used. Sustainable melting for our children.

Induction Melting Furnace - To love the environment

The perfect bronze alloy

Only new metal is used for the real cowbells. Metal scrap that is not properly processed can contain very toxic substances and metals such as lead or arsenic. These are very harmful to humans and animals.

Beautiful bells cannot be made with inferior bronze either. Foreign matter can cause holes or even loss of sound.

Incidentally, even bronze from the Middle Ages can be found in the recycled bronze. You even hold a piece of history in your hands. Who knows where your bell has been and what it has experienced?

Be careful with our limited resources, a tradition that goes back 290 years. Air tubes, sprues, shavings and bronze spurted out of the ladle during the casting process are swept up and remelted. Not a piece is wasted.

Incidentally, the exact composition of the bronze is a well-kept family secret and is made according to grandfather’s secret recipe. Only this much can be revealed: The alloy consists of approx. 80% copper and 20% tin. A real bell bronze.

The molding sand – a product from mother nature

After casting, the molding sand is also completely recycled for the next casting. Usually the sand is yellowish. The sand gets its black color from the high temperatures during casting. A small part of the sand burns during casting. Only this part is replaced with new sand during processing. The sand is a product of Mother Nature. Incidentally, the exact composition is also a family secret and has been passed on orally for many generations. The unique surface of the real cow bells can only be achieved with perfect sand.

The bell belt leather – High quality, sustainable

Vegetable-tanned leather is the basis for high-quality bell straps. Here, too, the focus is on sustainability. Vegetable tanning means that tanning agents from bark, leaves, roots and fruits are used.

The Berger bell foundry completely dispenses with badger hair trimmings, i.e. fur. The animals are often brutally killed to obtain the badger skins. Farmed fur animals from many countries are mostly kept under bad conditions and brutally killed. For ethnic and moral reasons, the Berger bell foundry cannot and does not want to rely on such products.
A clear conscience is guaranteed with bell straps from Berger.
